Overview
Aldi is a grocery store chain located in select states in North America. Aldi has a mobile application available for iPhone and android users. The mobile app allows users to create shopping lists, create mobile deliveries, and many other options. Aldi has come to us to help what is successful and unsuccessful about the application. To help confirm or address any successes and problems, we conducted mobile guerrilla usability testing on several participants. The data collected will be analyzed and show what is successful about the website and what needs to be fixed.
In order to solve this problem we focused on the process in which the user interacts with the application. To help us learn more about the problem we focused on asking participants to perform these tasks:
• 1a. Grocery Delivery
• 1b. Contacting Customer Service
• 2a. Locating Recipes
• 2b. Creating a Shopping List
• 3. Adding Items From The Weekly Circular
Aldi wants to know if user’s are happy with the mobile app and locating everything they need successfully. They plan on redesigning the app based off of our feedback.
Research Methods
The method that was chosen to gather data was mobile guerrilla testing. These tests allowed us to collect data directly from the participants mobile screen. We then analyze the data and can find the strengths and weaknesses in the application.
Data Analysis
The research uncovered that participants were typically frustrated while using the app. There was a good amount of task success rates, but for the participants that failed certain tasks it was the applications doing.
Key Findings
• Participants were able to successfully locate the grocery delivery.
• There was confusion with linking out to Aldi’s website on the internet browser.
• The participants were able to locate customer service, but wanted more options.
• Participants had a difficult time locating the Recipes, and 3 of the 6 participants failed.
• Creating a shopping list was successful for all participants, but they wanted to see the actual items in stock and how much they cost.
• Only one participants failed to find the weekly circular, and many had trouble navigating it.
• Participants often noted that the navigation was bad on the application, and didn’t take them to their desired location.
Key Recommendations
• Do not have the app link out to an internet browser. Everything should be within the app.
• Include more methods of contacting customer service, like telephone number.
• Have a homepage for the application, instead of “Featured” section.
• Have a featured recipes section that user’s can locate without trouble.
• Allow users to select the in stock items while creating a grocery list, also include the price automatically.
• Automatically add the ingredients to the shopping list for desired recipes on the Aldi website.
• Have a pop up modal for the weekly circular instead of directing to another page of selected item.
